A page from the NJI Holiday Cookbook featuring a balsamic pear galette that I love to make for friends at any kind of gathering.
I’m a huge fan of Chris Ware comics and how he visually fractures storylines with squares and diagrams, so I wanted to play with a similar style to display the flow the instructions. Dotted lines connect an ingredient to a tool, and solid lines show the ingredient being transformed.
I also hoped to champion the textures of the recipe (the rumpled skin of brie cheese, or the faded spots of a juicy Asian pear by using digital watercolor brushes with Procreate on a tablet. By emphasizing small details on each element I drew here, hopefully you can clearly see that each ingredient brings something unique to the dish.
